With Kybella®, you can reduce double chin, the extra pocket of fat under your chin for a much more attractive profile. This injectable treatment targets fat cells in the submental area to improve your profile. At Skin MD, we have found this first-of-its-kind, FDA-approved injectable treatment, highly effective in contouring, reducing, and improving the appearance of a mild to moderate double chin.
When Double Is Not Double The Fun, Boston Chooses Kybella:
Boston is a famously active environment. We pride ourselves on our marathon, the Red Sox, and the finest sport and fitness venues in the country. Still, many of us can’t fight the genetic components of fat that make up the dreaded double chin! No exercise seems to cure it, but Skin MD offers a treatment that lifts and eradicates your double troubles- for good!
What Is Kybella® and How Does It Work?
The active ingredient in Kybella® is synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella® reduces fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under your chin. The great news about Kybella® is that once these cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat.
Kybella® is a treatment that will be customized to meet your unique aesthetic goals. Our medically trained staff will assess the amount of extra fat under your chin and discuss your treatment options. Best of all, this in-office procedure is simple, takes only about 30 minutes, and, just a few weeks after your first injection, noticeable results will be seen.
What does a Kybella® treatment involve?
Treatment can only be administered by a Kybella-trained healthcare specialist, like our Skin MD Registered Nurses. At each treatment, you will receive multiple small injections under your chin, and the injection process takes about 30 minutes. The exact number of injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile.
Of course, before you ever have a treatment, you will meet with a member of the Skin MD medical staff who will examine the area under and around your chin to determine the exact treatment protocol that will be optimal for you and will then discuss your options before treatment begins.
On the day of your Kybella® treatment, you will receive a topical anesthetic or ice pack to numb the area where the injections will be given. This is to minimize any discomfort you may feel as the session does involve dozens of small injections, which can cause some patients mild burning or a stinging sensation.
Post-injection, some patients may experience headaches, swelling at the injection site, bruising, numbness, redness of the skin, or pain. However, this generally lasts only a few days, but on occasion, patients can experience these symptoms for several weeks as the fat melts away.
Also, while you will see noticeable results a few weeks after your first injection, you may choose to have multiple treatments to get the smooth chin look you desire. Your final optimal results can be seen within three months after their treatment.
What Areas Can be Treated with Kybella®?
Kybella® is currently only approved by the FDA to be used under the chin but has been successfully used on other areas of the body. Kybella® can be used on bra fat, the abdomen, flanks, and other areas that are too minimal to treat with liposuction.*
How many Kybella® treatments will I need?
Every Skin MD patient will have a different chin profile, so the number of treatments we recommend will vary for each individual. We will determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental (under chin) fat and your treatment goals. Most of our patients require between 1 to 2 treatments; however, if you have a more pronounced double chin, you could expect 3 to 4 treatments to achieve your desired profile. Treatments will be performed 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the treatment protocol, our medical staff feels will get you your optimal results.
The results of Kybella® should be long-lasting, and re-treatment is not expected. However, due to the normal aging process, you could experience changes to the skin and other tissues of the neck, and you may wish to seek additional laser or cosmetic options at that time.
What are the potential side effects?
The most common side effects that could occur in the treatment area include:
- Areas of hardness
However, Kybella® can cause more serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw that can temporarily cause an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, or trouble swallowing. Even these side effects are usually temporary and often resolve on their own. Skin MD patients should notify us right away if they experience any of these adverse effects from their treatment.
What should I tell my Skin MD practitioner before treatment?
Through the Skin MD consultation process, our medical staff will review your complete health and medical history. Before receiving Kybella®, it is particularly important for you to let us know if you:
