Melasma is a common skin issue characterized by dark, discolored skin patches that seem to crop up on different parts of the body, but especially on the face. Often referred to as the “mask of pregnancy,” this problem is especially common among pregnant women.

That said, both men and women can get melasma along with the symptoms that come with it. Thankfully, addressing this skin condition doesn’t have to involve surgery or even invasive procedures. At Skin MD, we use the enlighten® PICO Genesis laser and/or chemical peels to treat this and other hyperpigmentation issues.

How Does Melasma Occur?

Pigmentation problems like melasma are caused by the production of overactive cells. How melasma begins and how hard it can strike is difficult to determine prior to the appearance of symptoms. The dark spots that characterize this issue may show up very slowly or appear suddenly and without warning. The usual reason for the appearance of these spots is a combination of excessive melanin and ultraviolet (UV) light.

What Are the Signs?

The most common signs of melasma are dark spots that can affect the cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin. These spots can sometimes become irritated and cause discomfort. Discolored, symmetrical patches are also common with this condition. Though not dangerous, many people struggling with this issue prefer to have the spots removed for aesthetic reasons.

Treatment Options for Melasma

At Skin MD, we use the enlighten® PICO Genesis to address pigmentation issues like melasma. This laser works by selectively shattering unwanted pigmentation and remodeling the upper layer of your skin. The process is well-tolerated; at most, you should feel a slight warming sensation as the laser goes to work. 2-3 treatments are usually needed to get the best result. Alternatively, or in conjunction, medical grade chemical peels can also address melasma and pigment challenges.
