How do neuromodulators work?
The special compound found in Dysport® works by disrupting the nerve signaling processes that cause muscle movement. Unlike dermal fillers that enhance facial volume, neurotoxins work by paralyzing your muscles and preventing them from causing added strain to your skin. What areas can Dysport® treat?
Wrinkles: Dysport® is most often used to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles around the areas of the face.

What does an injectable treatment involve?
Your treatment will be performed by either Dr. Flashner or one of our highly qualified Registered Nurse injectors. Regardless of which master injector of our medical staff performs your treatment, you can be confident that Dr. Flashner oversees every patient’s chart.
Pre-injection, your skin will be cleansed, and an ice pack applied to numb the area where the injections will be given.
You will be injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. The neurotoxins in the injectable go to work by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles so that the injected muscle cannot contract, which makes the wrinkles relax and soften.
The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including the specific area being treated and whether you are being treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®. The injections usually take about 10 to 15 minutes. Most patients find the treatment to be virtually pain-free and report that it feels like a pinch.
Post-injection, there is little to no downtime. Some people do experience bruising or other minor local side effects, but you should be able to resume your normal daily activities right after your procedure.
What results can I expect from my neurotoxin?
For most patients, the results of your treatment will gradually take effect over the next few days following the injections, with the final result achieved within two weeks post-treatment. However, you may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours for moderate to severe frown lines.

The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® should last anywhere from three to six months. Over time, the muscle action gradually returns, and the lines and wrinkles will begin to reappear; however, if you continue on a consistent treatment schedule, the lines and wrinkles often appear less and less severe because the muscles are being trained to relax.

What is the key ingredient and is it safe?
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, called botulinum toxin. It is used medically in several ways:
- to treat certain muscular disorders
- to treat excessive sweating
- to treat migraines
- to treat some bladder and bowel disorders
- to cosmetically remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles
Clostridium Botulinum is an organism found in the natural environment where it is mostly inactive and non-toxic. The Botulinum toxin can be safely injected in extremely small concentrations and works by preventing signals from the nerve cells from reaching muscles. This effectively leaves the muscles without instructions to contract and therefore temporarily paralyzes them.
For your BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® injection, the Botulinum toxin powder has been diluted in saline (sodium chloride). It will be injected directly into neuromuscular tissue where it disrupts the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine that causes muscle cells to contract or shorten. By preventing the release of acetylcholine, botulinum toxin prevents abnormal muscle contraction allowing the muscles to become less stiff and thus relaxing your facial wrinkles and lines.
What should I be prepared to discuss in my consultation?
Please be prepared to tell us about any medical conditions, including any prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking. It’s important to let us know if you have been treated with a botulinum toxin product in the last four months and whether you experienced any allergies or side effects. We will also ask you if you have had surgery on your face or plan to do so if you have weakness in your forehead muscles, have trouble raising your eyebrows, or have drooping eyelids. We must know if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if you are nursing or plan to nurse.
