What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgery that is typically done in response to breast sagging as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or aging. Breast lifts combine the removal of excess breast skin with skin tightening, making this procedure a good option for a woman who wants to reclaim her natural shape without a major change in size. Sometimes along with the lift, a breast implant is used to enhance and replace involuted breast tissue.

What Are the Benefits of This Procedure?

A major benefit to having a mastopexy lies in the versatility of the procedure. During the surgery, we can use different techniques to cater to your particular needs and give you a natural-looking lift. However, it all starts with an evaluation. When you visit one of our offices, our surgical team will evaluate your breasts, making a note of the following:

  • The size and shape of your breasts.
  • The size and position of your areolas.
  • The quality and elasticity of your skin.
  • The degree of sagging and amount of excess skin.

Another benefit of having your breast lift performed at Skin MD lies in the results and support you will receive after your procedure. We’re staffed by board-certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Albert Ko, who has over two decades of experience helping patients just like you.

How Does a Breast Lift Procedure Work?

A typical breast lift is performed under either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Once ready, the process involves a series of simple steps:

  • An incision is made either around the areola, around and vertically down(Lollipop), or an inverted “T” type incision is used.
  • Your breasts are reshaped through lifting, repositioning, and the removal of excess skin.
  • Your skin is tightened, and the incisions are closed.
  • And sometimes a breast implant is inserted at this time (when the volume is desired).

What Can I Expect?

Some incision lines will be concealed along the contours of your breasts. Others may be visible on the breasts’ surface. Incision lines are permanent but do fade over time in most cases. Healing after the surgery will require the use of an elastic bandage or support bra. A small drain may also be necessary to remove excess blood or fluid. This is removed at your first postoperative visit and does not hurt.

The good news is that the results of your breast lift can be seen right away. It may take several weeks for your breasts to heal fully, but we’ll be there to support you at every step.
