Treating yourself to a Botox procedure is a great way to feel fresh and rejuvenated. It’s also highly effective in improving the cosmetic appearance of your face, as an estimated 82% of patients report seeing improvement within a week of treatment.
But much of this effectiveness relies on the right care. Once you leave the med spa following treatment, there are specific steps you can take to ensure that your procedure is as successful as possible. While you should first follow your clinician’s instructions, also consider the following aftercare dos and don’ts as well.
DO sleep on your back.
Your clinician will like you tell you to avoid lying down for about four hours after your procedure. After that, you will be fine to go to sleep at night, but it’s best to avoid sleeping on your side or stomach. If you move around too much, you might move your Botox. So, opt to snooze on your back.
DON’T do any vigorous exercise.
Your clinician will give you more specific instructions on what types of activities are okay to do, but try to avoid anything too vigorous for the first day after treatment. You want to keep the injected area in place. You should also avoid anything that involves heavy lifting or strain.
DO be patient.
Remember that your treatment will not miraculously show results over night. It will take about four to seven days for the procedure to take effect, so be patient. Your facial muscles will adapt during this time and any bruising should fade.
DON’T take strong painkillers or use alcohol.
Avoid any blood-thinning and anti-inflammatory painkillers following your procedure. Common medications of this type include Motrin, ibuprofen, Advil, and Aleve. Ask your clinician how you should control any pain, and be sure to tell them if you are taking any prescription medications.
DO call your skin clinic about any concerns.
Above all, always call the med spa if you have any questions, concerns, or doubts. They will give you advice on how to handle your situation or advise that you come back into the clinic. They may also have you schedule a follow-up appointment, so be sure to attend.
As with other procedures like coolsculpting, ultratherapy, and laser hair removal, Botox requires self-monitoring and safe aftercare. Remember that the skin professionals at your med spa are available to assist you, so always base your care practices on their advice. Doing so will yield gorgeous cosmetic results.
