Our Treatments
Melasma is a skin disorder that commonly causes dark, discolored patches of skin that appear on different parts of the body, especially the face. Often called the ‘mask of pregnancy,’ melasma appears particularly among pregnant women, those taking birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, and can be very common in people with darker skin tones.
That said, both men and women can get melasma along with the symptoms that come with it. Thankfully, addressing this skin condition doesn’t have to involve surgery or even invasive procedures. At SkinMD, we can diagnose melasma and use the enlighten® PICO Genesis laser and/or chemical peels to treat this and other hyperpigmentation issues.
How Do You Develop Melasma?
Skin discoloration problems like melasma are caused by the production of overactive cells. How melasma begins, what triggers melasma, and how hard it can strike are difficult to determine prior to the appearance of symptoms. The dark spots that characterize this issue may show up very slowly or appear suddenly and without warning. The usual reason for the appearance of these spots is a combination of excessive melanin and ultraviolet (UV) light (excess sun exposure). It’s another reason why sun protection is so vital.
How to Diagnose Melasma
The most common signs of melasma are dark spots or dark patches that can affect the cheeks, forehead, nose, chin, and upper lip. These spots can sometimes become irritated and cause discomfort. Discolored, symmetrical patches are also common with this condition. Though not dangerous (it’s not skin cancer), many people struggling with dermal melasma prefer to have the spots removed for aesthetic reasons.
Treating Melasma
At SkinMD, we use the enlighten® PICO Genesis to address pigmentation issues like melasma patches. This laser works by selectively shattering unwanted pigmentation and remodeling the upper layer of your skin. The process is well-tolerated; at most, you should feel a slight warming sensation as the laser goes to work. 2-3 treatments are usually needed to get the best result. Alternatively, or in conjunction, medical-grade chemical peels can also address melasma and pigment challenges.
