Why Do I Have Freckles?
Freckles are a result of harmless melanin overproduction. Melanin is a polymer responsible for skin and hair color (pigmentation). When your skin comes in contact with sun exposure, brown spots and hyperpigmentation are soon to follow, especially with sun damage. In some cases, that exposure causes small dots to form on the skin instead. Some people may have pale, freckled skin, while others may have darker-looking dots. These freckles are made up of a cluster of skin cells that contain melanin. The likelihood of getting these odd little dots is attributed to both the natural environment and genetic predisposition. They can appear on both light skin and darker skin.
What Are the Signs?
Freckles are typically grouped into two categories: ephelides and solar lentigines. Ephelides are a common type of pigmentation. They appear red or light brown and tend to develop in the first 2-3 years of a person’s life after sun exposure. Solar lentigines, on the other hand, are dark patches of skin that develop during adulthood. Despite the categorization, freckles can vary in size and color from person to person. We all have unique skin characteristics and, therefore, could have this condition expressed in different ways.

MEET THE TEAMWays to Get Rid of and Lighten Freckles
At SkinMD, we provide several laser treatments, light therapies (like intense pulsed light/IPL), and radiofrequency options for addressing pigmentation. Our enlighten® PICO Genesis laser, for example, can lighten pigmentation in less than an hour. We also offer chemical peels, other laser therapies, and custom facials.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels take off layers of the skin using a customized chemical solution. It can be made of everything from glycolic acid to lactic acid to salicylic acid. These chemicals allow the skin to peel off and leave you with a brighter and more radiant complexion. By removing the top layers of this skin, this unique treatment can remove freckles as well.
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)
IPL works by emitting broad-spectrum light onto the skin. The light that penetrates the skin is absorbed by the melanin. The light is then converted into heat, which damages or destroys the targeted areas (like where freckles are located), leading to smoother and flawless skin.
Laser Treatment
Laser treatments use concentrated beams of light. Like light therapy, this laser light is absorbed by the melanin in the skin. This breaks up the pigment, leading to a clearer and pigment-free complexion.
These freckle and skin pigmentation treatments are non-invasive and require little, if any, downtime. To learn more about this and our other options, get in touch with a SkinMD office near you.
