Sweating is something we all do. It’s a natural process that occurs when we exercise or on particularly hot days. However, sweating in excess can be a sign of a medical condition. If you sweat profusely under normal circumstances, you may have hyperhidrosis. This condition is caused by overactive nerve responses that signal your sweat glands to perspire. If you’ve experienced this issue, you know how unpleasant it can be, especially in social situations. Thankfully, the use of BOTOX® for excessive sweating has been shown to be a great solution.
BOTOX® temporarily blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate sweat glands when it is injected into areas of excess sweating. The formula prevents the glands from receiving chemical signals, thereby reducing gland activity. If you’re interested in learning more about the process, we welcome you to schedule a consultation at a SkinMD office location near you.
Why choose BOTOX® for excessive sweating?
The main benefits of choosing BOTOX® as a treatment are the long-lasting effects and the simplicity of the procedure. Choosing BOTOX® for excessive sweating has resulted in dryness for up to 201 days, or 6.7 months for a majority of patients. Patients can see results after just one injection session!
Which areas can BOTOX® treat?
BOTOX® is an effective hyperhidrosis treatment for both men and women alike. It can treat excess sweating in the following areas.
- Hands
- Armpits
- Feet
- Faces and Heads
- Under the Breasts
How many injections does it take?
During your treatment, 10-15 small injections of BOTOX® will be made into the affected area using a very fine needle. After the injections, you should notice a significant reduction in sweating within four weeks of your first treatment. If you do not see a significant reduction, you should get in touch with us to schedule a follow-up session.
FAQS
When is it time for another treatment?
While BOTOX® is effective for treating severe sweating, it is not a permanent cure. Your symptoms will return gradually, and you will have to schedule a follow-up appointment for additional injections. Our team at SkinMD will work with you to coordinate a schedule plan to help you maintain your results.
Is BOTOX® for excess sweating right for me?
Women who are pregnant, those with certain medical conditions, and those with certain allergies should not try this treatment. During your consultation at one of our offices, our staff will take the time to evaluate your medical history to see if this treatment is right for you.
What is the key ingredient and is it safe?
BOTOX® and other similar injectables are made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, called botulinum toxin. This substance is used medically in several ways:
- to treat certain muscular disorders
- to treat excessive sweating
- to treat migraines
- to treat some bladder and bowel disorders
- to cosmetically remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles
Clostridium Botulinum is an organism found in the natural environment where it is mostly inactive and non-toxic. The Botulinum toxin can be safely injected in extremely small concentrations and works by preventing signals from the nerve cells from reaching muscles. This effectively leaves the muscles without instructions to contract and therefore temporarily paralyzes them.
What should I be prepared to discuss in my consultation?
Please be prepared to tell us about any medical conditions, including any prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking. It’s important to let us know if you have been treated with a botulinum toxin product in the last four months and whether you experienced any allergies or side effects. We must know if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if you are nursing or plan to nurse.
During the consultation, we welcome you to ask any questions you have about the treatment process! We are happy to share more information with you about our medical expertise as well.
