Do you dread Throwback Thursdays as much as we do? Whether it’s a snapshot of you and your siblings doing something silly or a selfie of you and your pals from a night that you’d rather forget, there is a lot to dread about #TBT.
At the top of the list of the worst throwback pictures; the ones that show what we looked like decades ago. Those images are almost like looking at a different person, one with an enviable body confidently strutting around. It’s probably pretty obvious why these photos are the most cringeworthy of them all; they remind us of how much effect the passing of time has had on the way we look and feel.
But, perhaps these pictures are just what we need to get motivated. When we compare the images of our youthful-looking skin to our current damaged, and, yes, wrinkly faces, it encourages us to seek out ways to turn back the hands of time.
Dermal Fillers at Skin MD
Dermal fillers are the number one “go-to” for anti-aging treatments. At Skin MD we carry a full range of products including:
Juvéderm®
- Ultra Plus™ – The softest dermal filler in the Juvéderm® family. It is used to treat medium-depth wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It can also smooth out depressed scars and enhance your lips. Injections can last up to one year.
- Volbella™ – The ONLY FDA-approved injectable filler proven to increase lip fullness AND improve the appearance of vertical lip lines for up to one year.
- Vollure™ – The first and only hyaluronic acid dermal filler approved for the correction of moderate to severe wrinkles and folds that lasts up to 18 months.
- Voluma™ – Helps enhance contour and create a more youthful profile for up to two years. Juvéderm® Voluma™ gives you an instant, long-lasting lift.
Radiesse®
These specialized injectable fillers are used to reduce the appearance of facial folds and wrinkles. Radiesse® is different from other fillers because it is made from calcium-based microspheres that help reconstruct the skin by stimulating collagen production, ultimately providing the longest-lasting results. Radiesse® is great for volume enhancement and is a safe and effective procedure providing patients with results that can typically last from six months to one year.
Restylane®
- Contour™ – The only cheek filler with XpresHAn Technology™ that restores your natural contour, frees dynamic expression, and refreshes your look.
- Defyne™ – A hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is able to help restore a more youthful, natural-looking appearance, while helping maintain your natural expressions.
- Kysse™ – A powerful lip filler that adds volume, smooths upper lip lines for up to one year, and enhances lip color.
- Lyft™ – This filler is FDA-approved to provide fullness to cheeks and add volume to correct and smooth nasolabial folds (smile lines).
- Refyne™ – This next-generation filler is designed to help support your skin while keeping you looking like yourself. It helps soften laugh lines (nasolabial and marionette lines) and can help you restore a more natural look to your face while maintaining your facial expressions.
- Silk™ – Designed specifically to provide natural-looking results in these particular areas by using smaller, smoother hyaluronic acid particles than those used in other Restylane® products.
BELOTERO BALANCE®
These fillers use hyaluronic acid (HA) to restore the plumpness of your facial skin. The injection process is fast and results have been shown to last for up to six months! BELOTERO BALANCE® is a standout because of its manufacturing process. Its formula has a smooth consistency that fills in areas that lack HA right away. This leads to fast, natural-looking results.

Are Dermal Fillers the Best Choice for my Face and Skin?
At Skin MD, we realize that to most people, a wrinkle is a wrinkle. However, to our aesthetic injectors, each line and crease is special and has unique properties on its own which may require
a specific injection technique to address. It’s critical to have a highly trained master injector, carefully assess and identify the kinds of creases, lines, and other skin issues that you have, before determining a customized treatment plan.
Natural-looking results are always a goal at Skin MD. An injection is an art, so the key to achieving the best results is choosing an experienced injector. All of our providers are extensively trained and fully supervised by our founder and medical director, Dr. Paul Flashner.
Most patients experience remarkable rejuvenating results that last from six months to one year.
FAQS
What Does an Injectable Treatment Involve?
Your treatment will be performed by either Dr. Flashner or one of our highly qualified master injectors. Regardless of which member of our medical providers performs your treatment, you can be confident that Dr. Flashner oversees every patient’s chart.
If you are concerned about experiencing any pain from the injections, you’ll be happy to learn that, pre-injection, you will receive a topical anesthetic or ice pack to numb the area where the injections will be given. Some fillers have a numbing medicine mixed in with them.
Your treatment session will typically take about 30 minutes but sometimes last longer, depending on the area being filled and the product. After a filler injection, you can expect some mild discomfort, redness, and swelling at the injection site. Swelling is typically minor and should not interfere with you returning to normal activities post-appointment.
Injectable treatments require little to no downtime. Although you may experience bruising or other minor local side effects from the injection, you don’t need to plan a day off from work or cancel any social obligations (unless, of course, you want to!).
Is There Any Preparation Required for a Dermal Filler Treatment?
There is minimal preparation required for Dermal Fillers. However, any time a needle is injected into the skin, there will be a chance of bruising. To decrease your chances of bruising, it is smart to avoid blood thinning agents such as ibuprofen and aspirin for one to two weeks before your appointment. This also includes similar medications, such as Alleve®, Motrin®, and most over the counter analgesic pain medications other than
acetaminophen (Tylenol®). If you take prescription medications that thin your blood, including (but not limited to) Coumadin® (warfarin) and Plavix®, you should be aware that you are more likely for bruising to occur from your injections. If you smoke, your likelihood of bruising is also increased.
You can wear makeup as usual on the day of your treatment; however, the injection area will
be wiped clean so you may want to reapply makeup post-procedure. If you exercise daily, you may choose to work out before your treatment since additional swelling may occur with strenuous physical activity immediately following your treatment. At the very least, we recommend you wait at least six hours before resuming vigorous exercise and avoid exposing yourself to direct sunlight as well.
What is the Active Ingredient in Dermal Fillers?
Dermal Fillers are biocompatible, which means they do not have a harmful effect on the human body. They are designed to create lift and add volume to key areas of the face that show signs of aging. The active ingredient in many of our dermal filler offerings is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance that is naturally produced in your body and acts
like a sponge to bind and absorb water in our skin. This, in turn, creates volume in the face. Unfortunately, as we age, the hyaluronic acid content in our skin decreases, contributing to the development of lines and wrinkles. HA was approved as a dermal filler by the FDA in 2003.
Some brands of dermal fillers, such as Radiesse, add non-organic material such as calcium hydroxylapatite to the hyaluronic injection. These synthetic materials can’t be broken down and absorbed by the body, which makes these types of fillers semi-permanent.
What Are Typical Dermal Filler Results?
Most fillers last between six months to one year. However, your results will depend on the type and depth of your skin folds and wrinkles, the area for injection, the filler material, and the initial dosage amount used by Dr. Flashner and our medical providers, your age, the health of your skin, and your desired results. Perhaps the most crucial factor, though,
is the skill and experience of the professional you work with, so we highly recommend you seek out a physician-owned and operated medical aesthetics practice, like Skin MD, for all your injectable needs.
Dr. Paul Flashner has been a practicing physician since 1982 and has focused his work
