Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic FAQS

• What does an injectable treatment involve at the injection site?

  Your appointment will be with one of our aesthetic expert injectors who have received specialized training, in the “SkinMD way” ensuring consistency in treatment outcomes.

  Pre-injection, your skin will be cleansed and you will be injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with minimal discomfort. Dyport and Botox are classified among muscle relaxants and acts as a neuromuscular blocking agent. The neurotoxins in the injectable work at nerve endings by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, inhibiting muscle contraction. As the underlying muscles relax, the overlying skin smooths, which softens the appearance of wrinkles.

  The number of injections needed depends on many factors, including the specific area being treated and the severity of the wrinkles being addressed. The injections usually take about 15 to 30 minutes. Most patients find the treatment to be virtually pain-free.

  Post-injection, there is little to no downtime. Some people do experience bruising or other minor local side effects, but you should be able to resume your normal daily activities right after your procedure. Small bumps at the injection site may appear which will dissipate within 30 to 60 minutes.

• What results can I expect from my neurotoxin?

  For most patients, the results of your treatment will gradually take effect over two to four days following the injections, with the final result achieved within 10 days post-treatment. 

  Our patients get excellent results and visible smoothing of lines around the brows (also known as the 11’s), forehead, lines around the eyes, crow’s feet, and mouth (lip lines). At your SkinMD consultation, we will give you honest feedback on what we believe Botox Cosmetic or Dysport can do for your wrinkles and strive to ensure proper expectations are set and met.

  The effects of Botox Cosmetic and Dysport should last anywhere from four to six months. Over time, the muscle action gradually returns, and the lines and wrinkles will begin to reappear; however, if you continue on a consistent treatment schedule, the lines and wrinkles often appear less and less severe because the muscles are being trained to relax and ultimately shrink due to disuse and atrophy.

  Most importantly, you will still look like yourself! (just a better version of you without those very noticeable frown lines and crow’s feet!) Your SkinMD medical staff receives advanced training and is dedicated to providing the most effective and natural-looking results.

• Are Dysport and Botox injections safe?

  There have been millions of Dysport and Botox injections performed over the past 25 years, with zero distal toxic effects when limited to cosmetic or aesthetic treatments.

• What should I be prepared to discuss in my consultation?

  Please be prepared to tell us about any medical conditions, including any prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking. It’s important to let us know if you have been treated with a neurotoxin product in the last three months and whether you experienced any allergies or side effects. We must know if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if you are nursing or plan to nurse.
