Dermal Fillers by SkinMD

Do you dread the thought of sharing old photos on Throwback Thursdays? Whether it’s a snapshot of you and your siblings from years ago or a photo from just last year, many feel hesitant about sharing old photos due to the inevitable, obvious signs of aging.

At the top of the list of the worst throwback pictures are the ones that show what we looked like decades ago. Those images are almost like looking at a different person, one with a more youthful appearance. It’s probably pretty obvious why these photos are the most difficult of them all; they remind us of how much effect the passing of time has had on the way we look and feel.

But perhaps these pictures are just what we need to get motivated. When we compare the images of our youthful-looking skin to our current aged faces, it encourages us to seek out ways to turn back the hands of time.

Dermal Fillers at SkinMD

Dermal fillers are the number one “go-to” for anti-aging treatments. At SkinMD, we carry a full range of products, including a selection of dermal filler products and soft tissue fillers, each designed to address various cosmetic needs such as facial volume restoration, wrinkle smoothing, and non-surgical contouring. These treatments are part of clinical and aesthetic dermatology, provided by expert practitioners using advanced techniques.

Juvéderm®

  • Ultra Plus™ – The softest dermal filler in the Juvéderm® family. It is used to treat medium-depth wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It can also smooth lines and deep wrinkles, smooth out depressed scars, and enhance your lips. Injections can last up to one year.
  • Volbella™ – The ONLY FDA-approved injectable filler proven to increase lip fullness AND improve the appearance of vertical lip lines for up to one year.
  • Vollure™ – The first and only hyaluronic acid dermal filler approved for the correction of moderate to severe wrinkles and folds that lasts up to 18 months.
  • Voluma™ – Helps enhance contour and create a more youthful profile for up to two years. Juvéderm® Voluma™ gives you an instant, long-lasting lift.

These Juvéderm® products are HA fillers (hyaluronic acid fillers). Most HA fillers are formulated to provide natural-looking results and comfort during treatment.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® is different from other fillers because it is made from calcium-based microspheres that help reconstruct the skin by stimulating collagen production, ultimately providing the longest-lasting results. Radiesse® is great for volume enhancement and is a safe and effective procedure providing patients with results that can typically last from six months to one year, and it is also effective for enhancing the jaw line.

Restylane®

Restylane® products are designed to enhance facial contours and features, providing solutions for shaping and defining your appearance.

  • Contour™ – The only cheek filler with XpresHAn Technology™ that restores your natural contour, enhances facial contours, frees dynamic expression, and refreshes your look.
  • Defyne™ – A hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is able to help restore a more youthful, natural-looking appearance, while helping maintain your natural expressions.
  • Kysse™ – A powerful lip filler that adds volume, smooths upper lip lines for up to one year, and enhances lip color.
  • Lyft™ – This filler is FDA-approved to provide fullness to cheeks and add volume to correct and smooth nasolabial folds (smile lines).
  • Refyne™ – This next-generation filler is designed to help support your skin while keeping you looking like yourself. It helps soften laugh lines (nasolabial and marionette lines) and can help you restore a more natural look to your face while maintaining your facial expressions.
  • Silk™ – Designed specifically to provide natural-looking results in these particular areas by using smaller, smoother hyaluronic acid particles than those used in other Restylane® products.

BELOTERO BALANCE®

BELOTERO BALANCE® is a hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, making it biocompatible and safe for soft tissue augmentation. The injection process is fast, and results have been shown to last for up to six months! BELOTERO BALANCE® is a standout because of its manufacturing process. Its formula has a smooth consistency that fills in areas that lack HA right away. This leads to fast, natural-looking results.

Why Choose SkinMD for Dermal Fillers?

Choosing the right provider is just as important, if not more so, than selecting the filler itself. Poor results and complications are almost always the result of inexperience, not the product. At SkinMD, you’ll find a team of highly trained aesthetic medical providers who specialize in delivering natural, precise, and long-lasting results. All treatments are supervised by our founder and medical director, Dr. Paul Flashner, a practicing physician since 1982 and a recognized leader in non-invasive facial and body aesthetics.

At SkinMD, we understand that each line, crease, and contour is unique. Our master injectors carefully evaluate your facial anatomy, skin quality, and individual concerns to develop a customized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs. We prioritize realistic goals, ensuring your results are natural-looking, harmonious, and enhance your features without appearing overdone.

Your SkinMD experience begins with a one-on-one consultation, where our providers review your treatment history, assess your skin tone, texture, and laxity, discuss your aesthetic goals, and recommend the best solutions. This thoughtful approach allows us to set clear expectations and deliver results you’ll love. Most patients enjoy noticeable, rejuvenating results that last six months to a year, helping them look and feel their best.

At SkinMD, we aim to be more than a treatment provider; we strive to be your partner in ongoing aesthetic care, combining expertise, artistry, and personalized attention on your journey to timeless, natural beauty.

What Areas Can Dermal Fillers Correct?

At SkinMD, we are pleased to offer an assortment of injectable filler options to our patients. Our providers will help you select the type of filler that will achieve optimal results. The product(s) we use for your specific skincare concerns, along with the depth at which we inject your filler and the area of the face being treated, will determine your results, and may include:

    • Correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including laugh lines, marionette lines, jowls, and lips

    • Smoothing of fine lines on the surface of the skin

    • Filling in of deep lines and folds

    • Restoration of lost volume and fullness to your cheeks

    • Augmentation of soft tissues (like lips)

    • Augmentation of facial bone structure (such as the jawline or chin)

    • Filling of acne scars

Should I Get FaceTite or a Facelift?

There is certainly no denying that there are certain benefits of a facelift. However, the FaceTite treatment may be a more appropriate option for patients with less severe signs of facial aging, as well as those men and women who wish to avoid the cost, incisions, anesthesia, and recovery time associated with a traditional facelift surgery.

Schedule a consultation at any of our Boston area locations to discuss your personal options and aesthetic goals with one of our aesthetic providers. During your one-on-one conversation, you can explore if FaceTite is right for you!

Dermal Fillers FAQS

  • What Does an Injectable Treatment Involve?

Your treatment will be performed by one of our highly qualified providers. Regardless of which member of our medical team performs your treatment, you can be confident that Dr. Shanley oversees every patient’s chart.
The dermal filler procedure involves the use of facial fillers, which are injectable devices designed to create a smoother, fuller appearance in targeted facial areas for cosmetic enhancement.

If you are concerned about experiencing any pain from the injections, you’ll be happy to learn that, pre-injection, you will receive a topical anesthetic or ice pack to numb the area where the injections will be given. Some fillers have a numbing medicine mixed in with them.

Your treatment session will typically take about 30 minutes, but sometimes lasts longer, depending on the area being filled and the product. After a filler injection, you can expect some mild discomfort, redness, and swelling at the injection site. Swelling is typically minor and should not interfere with your returning to normal activities post-appointment.

Injectable treatments require little to no downtime. Although you may experience bruising or other minor local side effects from the injection, you don’t need to plan a day off from work or cancel any social obligations (unless, of course, you want to!).

  • Is There Any Preparation Required for a Dermal Filler Treatment?

There is minimal preparation required for Dermal Fillers. However, any time a needle is injected into the skin, there will be a chance of bruising. To decrease your chances of bruising, it is smart to avoid blood-thinning agents such as ibuprofen and aspirin for one to two weeks before your appointment. This also includes similar medications, such as Alleve®, Motrin®, and most over-the-counter analgesic pain medications other than acetaminophen (Tylenol®). If you take prescription medications that thin your blood, including (but not limited to) Coumadin® (warfarin) and Plavix®, you should be aware that you are more likely to bruise from your injections. If you smoke, your likelihood of bruising is also increased.
You can wear makeup as usual on the day of your treatment; however, the injection area will be wiped clean, so you may want to reapply makeup post-procedure. If you exercise daily, you may choose to work out before your treatment since additional swelling may occur with strenuous physical activity immediately following your treatment. At the very least, we recommend you wait at least six hours before resuming vigorous exercise and avoid exposing yourself to direct sunlight as well.

  • What is the Active Ingredient in Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers are biocompatible, which means they do not have a harmful effect on the human body. They are designed to create lift and add volume to key areas of the face that show signs of aging. The active ingredient in many of our dermal filler offerings is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance that is naturally produced in your body and acts like a sponge to bind and absorb water in our skin. This, in turn, creates volume in the face.

Dermal filler products vary in their active ingredients, texture, density, and injection depth, allowing cosmetic surgeons to select the right formulation for each area of concern. In addition to traditional fillers, fat injections are another option for restoring facial volume; this surgical procedure involves harvesting, purifying, and reinjecting a patient’s own fat, often providing longer-lasting results.

Unfortunately, as we age, the hyaluronic acid content in our skin decreases, contributing to the development of lines and wrinkles. HA was approved as a dermal filler by the FDA in 2003.

Some brands of dermal fillers, such as Radiesse, add non-organic material, such as calcium hydroxylapatite to the hyaluronic injection. These synthetic materials can’t be broken down and absorbed by the body, which makes these types of fillers semi-permanent.

  • What Are Typical Dermal Filler Results?

Most fillers last between six months and one year. However, your results will depend on the type and depth of your skin folds and wrinkles, the area for injection, the filler material, and the initial dosage amount used by our medical providers. Other factors include your age, the health of your skin, and your desired results. Perhaps the most crucial factor, though, is the skill and experience of the professional you work with, so we highly recommend you seek out a physician-owned and operated medical aesthetics practice, like SkinMD, for all your injectable needs.

Dr. Paul Flashner has been a practicing physician since 1982 and has focused his work for over ten years on non-invasive facial and body aesthetics. The SkinMD team comprises a group of highly experienced and educated Physicians, Registered Nurses, and estheticians. Continuing education of our employees will always be a top priority for SkinMD. • Are There Any Risks or Side Effects Associated with Dermal Fillers?

As with any medical procedure, there are risks involved with the use of dermal fillers. Any dermal filler can cause short- or long-term side effects, permanent side effects, or a combination. However, most side effects associated with dermal fillers occur shortly after.

The most common side effects from the use of FDA-approved Dermal Fillers are:

    • Bruising
    • Redness
    • Swelling
    • Pain
    • Tenderness
    • Itching, rash

    Very rare side effects include:

    • Infection
    • Open or draining wounds
    • A sore at the injection site
    • Allergic reactions
    • Necrosis (tissue death)
    • Allergic reactions are a potential risk associated with soft tissue fillers, and can sometimes lead to complications such as scarring or lumps.
    • Raised bumps in or under the skin (nodules or granulomas) that may need to be surgically removed

Working with the highly trained and experienced medical staff at SkinMD means that you will receive the best care from consultation to treatment to follow-up appointments. We are always dedicated to making your cosmetic and laser experience a truly amazing one, whether it’s your first time with us or you are a returning patient, and most importantly, a safe one.

  • What is the Difference Between Facial Fat Grafting and Dermal Fillers?

While injectable dermal fillers like hyaluronic acid and poly-L-lactic acid are popular choices for restoring facial volume and smoothing wrinkles and skin folds, facial fat grafting may offer a different approach for those seeking long-lasting, natural-looking results. Facial fat grafting, sometimes called fat transfer, is a surgical procedure that involves harvesting fat from one area of your body, such as the abdomen or thighs, and carefully injecting it into areas of the face that have lost volume or developed fine lines and deeper wrinkles. While we do not offer facial fat grafting at our practice, we do offer an array of other aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures that may provide you with the results you desire.
